Free Childbirth Classes at Medina Regional Hospital

Medina Regional Hospital will offer free classes to expectant parents beginning on Saturday, May 7, 2016.  The classes will be held in the hospital board room beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Topics to be covered in the class include hospital preparation, anatomy, labor, breathing techniques, the roles of the labor coach, pain management, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding and newborn infant care.  The information is helpful to anyone expecting a child, whether it is the first child or third child in the family.

The hospital is opening the classes to any women in Medina County.  They do not have to be patients of the Medina Healthcare System clinics or plan to deliver at Medina Regional Hospital to attend the free classes.  “We want to offer this additional service to the residents of Medina and surrounding counties to help prepare women and family members for the challenges of birth, labor, delivery and the care of the newborn,” says June McCaleb, RN, BSN, Labor & Delivery Department Director.  “This is also a great way for our residents to meet the hospital staff and tour our hospital and the maternity care wing” she adds.

June McCaleb, RN, BSN, will teach the monthly Saturday classes.  Class dates have been set for the first Saturday of each month.  Ms. McCaleb joined the staff at Medina Regional Hospital in November 2015.  She brings over 25 years of nursing experience to the facility, with more than 11 years of experience in Labor, Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery patient care.  She began her career as an LVN and received her RN and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UT Health Science Center of San Antonio in 2002.

She says, “I have enjoyed teaching childbirth and newborn education classes since 2006. I also became a certified lactation consultant in 2013 to provide additional education and family support in the field of breastfeeding the newborn.  Medina Regional Hospital has beautiful birthing suites to accommodate mom and baby, and room for family members to visit after the delivery.  We want to nurture the mother/child bond by keeping baby in the room as much as possible.”

Class dates for 2016 are: May 7, June 4, July 9, August 6, September 10, October 8, November 5 and December 3.  To sign up for the classes or schedule a tour, please call (830) 426-7958.  Please plan to attend a class at least 2 to 3 months before your due date.
